Vientiane, March 26, 2026 – Amata Group, represented by Amata City Lao Co., Ltd., and the Lao Ministry of Agriculture and Environment have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for technical cooperation. The agreement focuses on surveying and evaluating the potential development of a new ‘Food City’ project. This initiative is designed to advance Laos’s agricultural sector by shifting toward processing and value-added production, aligning with global trends in food security.

The signing ceremony was presided over by Mr. Varong Tangpraprutgul, Managing Director of Amata City Lao Co., Ltd., and Mrs. Thongchanh Akhamakhet, Permanent Secretary of the Lao Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, with distinguished representatives from both the public and private sectors in attendance.

Mr. Varong highlighted that the agreement underscores Lao PDR’s strong position as an economic partner, supported by strategic logistics connecting the region with China. The project capitalizes on the Lao-China railway’s strategic advantage, which links major Asian markets and unlocks new opportunities for exporting premium-quality agricultural products.

The Lao-China railway has significantly reduced logistics costs while increasing speed and convenience for regional transport. This enables access to markets such as China, Japan, South Korea, and beyond. Mr. Varong added that ‘Food City’ is more than just an agricultural project, it builds a new economic foundation that connects upstream and downstream production, processing, and distribution, thereby enhancing value and competitiveness in the global marketplace.

Mrs. Thongchanh Akhamakhet remarked that this partnership represents a pivotal step in transforming Laos’s agricultural sector from traditional methods to a high-value system. Incorporating technology, expertise, and modern management, the collaboration seeks to empower both farmers and entrepreneurs. She emphasized, “The Food City project will be a key mechanism for generating new opportunities in Laos’s agricultural sector, covering production, processing, and export. It will help increase farmers’ incomes and establish Laos as a regional hub for quality food production.”

The ‘Food City’ concept will be developed as an integrated food ecosystem, covering high-value crop cultivation, food processing, and cold-chain logistics to preserve product quality and increase value at every stage of the supply chain.
